TELEVISION PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE
by Zarach and Morris 1979. ISBN 0-333-19221-4
Although old, the principles of TV have not changed since it was
invented. A good introduction to how they work. Nowadays many TV
functions have disappeared into ICs, but you'll still need to
know what the ICs are doing. It does not cover more recent
developments like teletext, but you can always read BROADCAST DATA SYSTEMS for that. In
practice TV tunerheads have evolved to the point where the UHF
enters one end and baseband video and sound emerge. See the
Philips website for the latest products. Some even have an AM/FM
radio in there as well, for multimedia PC applications. Tuning is
almost always done by a digitally programmable phase lock loop
chip, via the I2C bus.
